Still Dry Red Wine

Bold, powerful and very complex wine with flavours of rosehip, blueberry cake, black plum, old leather and sandalwood.

Sacrantino is a bold and powerful wine, with an outstanding complexity of flavours and a smooth and velvety mouthfeel. The grape used, Sagrantino, is one of Italy’s most tannic and it’s really hard to master – which is why this wine is so exceptional. Aged for a long period of four years, Sacrantino is among the best wines of the area: it has won Gambero Rosso’s “three glasses” in 2020 and “two red glasses” in 2021, as well as “Three golden stars” by Veronelli.

Fratelli Pardi is a family winery which is over a hundred years old. It’s one of a few wineries in Montefalco recommended by Ian D’Agata in his encyclopaedia “Native wine grapes of Italy”. Today, brothers Alberto and Gianluca continue the tradition of the Pardi family producing award-winning Sagrantino wine.

“Concentrated, dense and uncompromising in style with powerful but refined tannins, there is plenty of dark blackberry and violet fruit to support the firm structure.” – Susan Hulme MW, Decanter, 15.10.2021

Winemaking

The Sagrantino grapes for this wine come from a single vineyard called Pietrauta, just 1 km west from the Montefalco old town. The harvest is done by hand in the second half of October. After pressing, the grape juice and skins undergo fermentation for six to eight days in stainless steel tanks, at a controlled temperature of 24 to 27°, followed by malolactic fermentation. After this, the wine is moved into large 2,600-litre Austrian oak barrels, where it ages for two years. Before bottling, the wine is transferred back into stainless steel tanks to rest for another nine to twelve months. Finally, after it’s bottled, Sacrantino completes its development in the cellar. Here, it remains undisturbed for yet another twelve months. Overall, Sacrantino is aged for a long period of four years, which is way longer than the minimum of 16 months prescribed by the DOCG wine laws.

Tasting notes

In the glass, this wine has a deep ruby colour. It offers a complex collection of flavours where you’ll find rosehip, violet flowers, blackcurrant leaf, blackberry and black plum, as well as flavours of sandalwood, blueberry cake, hibiscus tea and old leather. Sacrantino is a bold, powerful wine with a pronounced flavour. It has a full body and velvety texture with smooth tannins.
