Well-aged Barbera wine from San Michele cru in Roero. Deep tertiary aromas of dried red berries, vanilla, coconut and chocolate
This wine comes from a single vineyard located in San Michele cru (MGA), south-east from Canale in Roero. The designation “Superiore” is the highest quality level for Barbera d’Alba. It requires the wine to be matured for at least 12 months, including four months in oak. This “San Michele” Barbera Superiore was fermented in stainless steel before maturing in oak for 20 months. The long period in barrel helped the wine to pick up the oak’s tannins and flavours, leading to a more complex texture and taste.
Malvirà is a sustainable and organic winery – though this 2006 Barbera is from before they received the certification. The cellar is carbon neutral, constructed deep underground with geothermal heating and cooling systems.
Tasting notes
This Barbera Superiore has a deep ruby colour. It fills the glass with rich aromas from the time spent ageing in bottle, including notes of dried cranberry, kirsch, vanilla, coconut and chocolate. In addition to the precious tertiary notes, it still offers a kick of juicy red cherry. On the palate, it is dry and full-bodied, with moderate acidity, soft tannins and a complex, rich flavour.

Was very surprised by the quality of this wine. Very smooth and real depth of flavour. Wish I had bought more.
