Old vine Barbera with a silky texture and flavours of inky black plum, sweet cherry and dark chocolate

Grown on 50-year old vines with a very low yield, the Barbera grapes used to make this Barbera d’Asti Superiore have seriously concentrated flavours. The wine has received a very high appraisal from Gambero Rosso, and made it to the Final tasting of the 2020 competition – no mean feat! The grapes are harvested by hand in the last week of September or early October.

The knight on the bottle is a romantic emblem of a crusader – the protector of the Scagliola family.

Tasting notes

In the glass, this Scagliola Barbera d’Asti Superiore wine has a deep ruby colour. In the mouth, it is deep and dense, with a silky texture and flavours of inky black plum, sweet dark cherry and blackberry. It offers tastes of basil leaf, dark chocolate, dried black fruits and a touch of vanilla. This wine has rather soft, mellow tannins and a pleasant level of acidity. This is the signature trait of Barbera that nicely balances its power and fruitiness.

This Barbera d’Asti Superiore has a strong fruity flavour that can stand for itself, as well as acidity that will help to cleanse the palate. It will be the perfect partner for a lamb shank, pork chops, or any other fatty meat dish.

I am not a typical wine buff but I do drink and sample quite a lot of different types of red wines. Without waxing lyrically with a lot of excessively imaginative and creative language as typically used by many experts in describing wine attributes, I simply just know what I like and this boutique Sansi blend from the Barbera D’Asti area from the Piedmont region in north west Italy, is at least by my standards, an exceptional wine. Its rich, deep ruby colour supports an impressive 15.5% volume alcohol level which by virtue of being partially aged in oak barrels also helps polish it fruity flavour with a special velvety tannin finish.

The enjoyment and appreciation I obtain from relaxing with a fine wine such as this, in the evening, gives me a sense of opulent self-satisfaction in a way which no other alcoholic drink achieves.

This Sansi from the Scagliole vineyard is a very special wine with exceptional character and flavour and given it’s price and DOCG credentials (Italy’s top wine classification) it has to be recognised as representing excellent value for money.

Delicious wine so fruity and full of flavour. Dry and crisp – nice with antipasti

Recently discovered Independent Wine through Decanter magazine. Not only do they stock the highest quality award-winning wines, they also provide a personal touch in their detailed advice and recommendations. Having described my preferred tasting notes, the recommendations from Oleg and his team have been outstanding. The Sansi 2017 | Barbera d’Asti DOCG | Barbera was an unbelievable match for my preference: oak aged, sweet vanilla, deep character red. Thank you, Independent Wine: highly recommended.
