I Garagisti di Sorgono
I Garagisti di Sorgono (Garagists of Sorgono) is set in the mountainous region of Mandrolisai, in the geographic centre of Sardinia. It specialises in ultra-powerful old-vine wines made from Sardinia’s signature red grapes: Cannonau, Muristeddu and Monica.
The vines are over eighty years old, planted in the traditional alberello method (unterellised, or bush vine). The soil is very austere and rich in pink granite – which is associated with the highest quality Sardinian wines. Indeed, “I Garagisti” have an incredible track record, with the Merano Wine Festival including “Uras” in the list of Top-100 wines of Italy.
I Garagisti is Sardinia’s response to vins de garage: a movement born on the Right Bank of Bordeaux. During the 80’s, some of the best winemakers in Saint-Émilion put the strict rules of the appellation system aside to make full-bodied, incredibly ripe red wines in tiny quantities.
