Discover the raw essence of Nebbiolo’s powerful tannins in this deep wine, featuring flavours of red berries, wild rose and smoky charred wood.
For those of us who love tannic wines, Nebbiolo is the quintessential grape. This wine is not like Barolo or Barbaresco, which spend many years in oak to tame their tannins. This wine is just the opposite – a powerful, young Nebbiolo, that shows the full strength of this grape along with its delightful elegance and complex flavour. Paolo Demarie, the head winemaker, says “Nebbiolo is the maximum expression of our winegrowing excellence”.
Winemaking
The grapes were grown in Roero, on the left bank of the Tanaro river. This is where you’ll find Nebbiolo with a more mellow and fruity character than in neighbouring Barolo, over on the right bank. It’s thought to be so because the soils here are rich in clay and oceanic sediments from 15 million years ago, when this land was covered by an ancient ocean.
Langhe is in south Piemonte, sandwiched between the Alps in the north-west and the Apennine mountains in the east. It’s home to Barolo, Barbaresco, and Roero – the most prized denominations for Nebbiolo. While Barolo and Barbaresco laws demand long oak ageing, the rules of Langhe DOC give winemakers the freedom to produce young Nebbiolo wine.
Tasting notes
Medium garnet colour. On the nose, this Nebbiolo Langhe has pronounced aromas of mulberry, strawberries, wild rose flower and cranberries, with hints of charred wood, smoke and sweet pastry. There’s also a touch of bitter rosemary and pine needles. The wine is dry, with medium acidity, and it’s supercharged with mighty young tannins. In the mouth, it offers the taste of mulberries, strawberries and wild rose with a delightful long finish.
Conclusion? This is a beautiful wine for those of us who love tannins. It’s not expensive, and offers a good excuse to enjoy Nebbiolo without the full expense of Barolo or Barbaresco.
