Elegant, austere and fresh – the combined strengths of three legendary red grapes.
Scagliola’s wines are produced by the fifth generation of winemakers, from the grapes cultivated at the hill of San Siro, sandwiched between Monferrato and Langhe in Piedmont. Here, the soil is a unique mixture of sand, turf and rocks, which stresses the vines helping them to produce very rich and complex flavours. Azörd is a highly successful wine, which won the “Two Glasses” award and was listed in the “Italian wine bible” by Gambero Rosso – perhaps Italy’s top mark of quality. In Piedmontese, Azörd means “risk”: it reflects the gamble Maggiorino Scagliola made when he decided to plant and combine these three grapes. Two of them – Barbera and Nebbiolo – are renowned in Piedmont, while Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best “global” varieties. The combination of Barbera (fresh with crisp red fruit flavours), and Nebbiolo (deep with austere tannins) has created a unique wine with a seductive flavour.
Tasting notes: Dry and fresh, with flavours of red plum and blackberries. Hints of cloves and cinnamon from ageing in large oak barrels. A touch of raisin, followed by sweet tobacco and leather, hint at the wine’s ageing and development.
Awards: “Two Glasses” award by Gambero Rosso (2017 vintage) | James Suckling, 89 points (2014 vintage)
