Uras Cannonau 2016 | Sardinia | Gold Medal

A rich example of Sardinia’s signature red wine. Decanter Gold

In the mountainous heart of Sardinia, on top of the Sa Sedda hill in Pardu and Cresia, lies an eighty-year-old vineyard. It was planted on the white granite soil by the grandfather of Pietro Uras – the current owner and the man behind this wine. Cannonau is one of the most ancient grapes in the Mediterranean, with recent excavations dating it back 3,200 years. It’s also very specific to Sardinia.

Pietro defies commercial logic to make this wine which bears his name. On these arid granite soils, the vines only produce half a kilo of grapes per plant. For comparison, in the New World the yield per vine can be two or three times higher. On the plus side, such low yields produce grapes with very concentrated flavours. Pietro says he wants to follow the course of nature and the austere way of life his ancestors experienced. His hard work has paid off, with the 2016 vintage winning a coveted Decanter Gold medal.

We are proud to present this wine in the UK. It is scarce, with only 2,300 bottles made for the whole world. Luckily, we’ve managed to get hold of a few cases, so be quick if you want to try it.
