An organic, light-bodied and sulfite-free wine from the most innovative winemaker in Roero

Arneis is the signature white grape of Roero in Piemonte, a region renowned for its refreshing dry wines. Giacomo, winemaker at Malvirà, showed us how us developed a method to replace sulfites (which are typically used to protect the wine against oxidation) with the wine’s natural CO2 (which is produced during fermentation). Usually CO2 is released at the end of the fermentation process, but here it is kept in as an antioxidant. This adds a delicate spritz to the finished wine.

Malvirà is the most influential producer in Roero, and possibly the most innovative as well. Their winery is organic certified and carbon neutral, constructed deep underground with geothermal heating and cooling systems.

Tasting notes: Pale yellow colour with aromas of white blossom, peach, cooked apple and citrus fruit, all at a pleasant medium intensity. On the palate it is dry and light-bodied, with low alcohol. Very refreshing, with the high acidity balanced by floral and fruit flavours. Persistent tiny bubbles add a hint of sparkle to this white wine.

A very pleasant and easy to drink white that we thoroughly enjoyed. Light but with enough of a fruit hit of lemons and pears. Delicious.

This is my new favourite white wine! It’s simply delicious, really refreshing and not too fruit forward. Lots of interesting stuff going on in the glass. As well as the floral and peachy notes mentioned in the description I also picked up creamy, bready undertones. I genuinely didn’t realise Italian whites could taste this good.
