Single vineyard Pinot Noir Riserva from the Dolomite Alps in Alto Adige – UK exclusive
This premium Pinot Noir Riserva is full of aromas of rose petals, cloves and dried strawberry. It’s produced by Peter Zemmer at his family-owned winery in Alto Adige – the German-speaking part of Italy. This wine has won the “Two Glasses” award from Gambero Rosso – possibly the most prestigious national wine competition in Italy. It is made from hand-selected grapes from a single vineyard (vigna) named Kofl, which lies at 1,030 metres above sea level in the foothills of the Dolomite Alps. The vineyard is south-facing, which means the grapes get lots of sunshine during the day and ripen well, despite the high altitude. The cold winds blowing from the glaciers keep the vines well ventilated. At such high elevation, the low night temperature helps the grapes to preserve their natural zingy acidity which results in refreshing wine.
Winemaking: The grapes are de-stemmed, crushed and fermented for seven days at a constant temperature of 26-28 °C. In order to extract more colour and tannins, Peter uses extended circulation and pumping over during that period. When fermentation is finished, he gently and slowly removes the particles over the course of two rackings. This is when the wine is slowly pumped into another vat, without the use of a centrifuge. Racking is more time-consuming, but it’s typical for fine wines. After this, the Pinot Noir Riserva is put into small French oak barriques to age for twelve months. Then, it is transferred into stainless steel vats to age for six months more. Finally, the wine is bottled and aged for six additional months, so that it can fully integrate and reach its true potential.
Tasting notes: Medium ruby colour. When poured in the glass, this Pinot Noir Riserva has pronounced aromas of rose petals and violet flowers, cloves, dried strawberries and dried cranberries. On the palate, it is dry with mouth-watering acidity. It offers a taste of flowers, spices and dried fruits. The wine has a medium level of alcohol, a medium body and noticeable fine tannins. This Riserva wine is still developing, and it will age beautifully in the cellar for a long time.
Ageing potential: 10 years
Awards: Decanter World Wine Awards 2020 – Silver Medal (2017 vintage) | “Two Glasses” by Gambero Rosso (2017 vintage) | 91/100 points by James Suckling (2017 vintage)
